About The Author

Daniel J. Lohrmann is the Michigan Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), and he also serves as the Director of the Office of Enterprise Security (OES) within the Michigan Department of Information Technology (MDIT).

Lohrmann is an internationally recognized government thought leader on a wide variety of technology & computer security topics. Dan has been quoted by major news media outlets, and he is a sought-after speaker at technology and security conferences. Dan's first book Virtual Integrity: Faithfully Navigating the Brave New Web is now available from Brazos Press.

Dan serves as the Emergency Management Coordinator for MDIT, and he led Michigan's efforts to restore IT operations following the northeast blackout of 2003. He led Michigan's involvement in US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) exercises including CyberStorm I in 2006 and CyberStorm II in 2008.

Lohrmann started his career at the National Security Agency (NSA) as a systems analyst, and he has 24 years of Information Technology (IT) experience. Throughout his career, Dan has served as CIO for the Michigan Department of Management & Budget, Senior Technology Executive for the e-Michigan Office (building the www.Michigan.gov portal), Technical Director for ManTech International in the United Kingdom (UK), and senior network engineer for Lockheed Martin (formerly Loral Aerospace).

Serving as the state government representative for the National Association of State CIOs (NASCIO), Dan sits on DHS's IT Government Coordinating Council (IT-GCC) in Washington, DC. In this role, Dan addresses Homeland Security issues such as public/private communications, intelligence sharing, writing and implementing the National Infrastructure Protection Plan (NIPP) IT Sector Plan, and privacy and security best practices. 

Lohrmann is also an Executive Board member of the Multi-State Information Sharing & Analysis Center (MS-ISAC), which coordinates cybersecurity actions among the 50 states.

Lohrmann served as President of Michigan InfraGard Member Alliance (IMA) from January 2006 through December 2007 and Vice President in 2005. Dan is currently serving as the Michigan InfraGard Chairman of the Executive Board. InfraGard works closely with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and other law enforcement organizations and Michigan private-sector companies to combat cyber crime.  

He holds a Masters Degree in Computer Science (CS) from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, and a Bachelors of Science Degree in CS from Valparaiso University in Indiana.  Mr. Lohrmann is a distinguished guest lecturer for the Masters Program in Information Assurance at Norwich University and a former faculty member of the University of Maryland, European Division.

In 2008, Dan was named as a "Public Official of the Year" in Governing Magazine's November issue and "CSO of the Year" for North America by SC Magazine's May issue. In December 2007, he was named as one of the "Top 25 Most Influential People in the Security Industry" by Security Magazine. In April 2006, he was selected as Information Security Executive of the Year (Central USA ) by the Executive Alliance. In July 2006, he was selected as a "Government Visionary" by Symantec Corporation.
